A Vine That Will Grow Up a Wood Fence?
I have wood fence all the way around my back yard and I hate the way it looks. I have 4 decorative metal vine posts that I was thinking of putting next to the fence. I would like a vine that will grow up the metal post, then sprawl out across the the fence. I don’t want something strong enough to damage the fence, but just cover it. Any suggestions?
I live in Oklahoma where it is very hot in the summer (and can get cold in winter).
Any vine that will cling to wood through rootlets will damage it over time. You might consider stringing trellis netting between the post, a little in front of the wood fence, and then grow vines that twine rather than cling. (like morning glory or scarlet runners, as opposed to english ivy, boston ivy, virginia ivy)
Most of the twining vines are annuals – but they usually self-seed very well, so you’ll have them every year. (Many self-seed a little TOO well, and are sometimes considered a nuisance)
try clematis, it’s a perennial and dies back nearly to the roots in winter.
it doesn’t damage the fences it grows on like wisteria would.
it also comes in a variety of colors.

get a trumpet vine. it will climb anything! and has flowers that will attract humming birds
There also are many climbing roses that look nice when mixed with clematis. Make sure you plan out the whole area so you can mix things together effectively.
virginia creeper
See if you can find a nursery that sells native plants. Native honeysuckle would do the job. (It has round leaves.)
The stuff that grows wild everywhere is Japanese honeysuckle and is quite invasive.
