Grapes of the World – Part 1

Most wines are named after the grape variety used for manufacturing. But, obviously, that producers can a highly skilled, uneducated wine, you just learned something new from reading this article. I encourage you to read and learn more about the wines you have heard and perhaps drunk, even at one time or another during their life.

This series of articles in three sections discuss many grape regions of the world.

Chardonnay – This grape originated in France and is grown throughout the world, both for sparkling and table wines. This is the main variety grown in the Val de Marne and Champagne is also grown in northern California, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington and Virginia. Chardonnay is often aged in oak barrels can have a connotation of vanilla aroma and fermented flavor that way. Chardonnay wines are usually served fresh and fit well with chicken or any dish that uses butter cream or type of salsa.

Chenin Blanc – This grape is originally from the Loire Valley region located in central-western France. There is also grown in California and South Africa (called "Steen" in southern Africa). This type of wine usually develops a delicate fruit taste. Due to the large amount of Chenin Blanc wines, this wine is usually inexpensive.

Gewurztraminer – This grape is known for its floral and spicy fragrance. Originally from Italy, Gewurztraminer is also grown successfully in France, California, Germany and New Zealand. Crops tend to fair better in colder climates. This type of wine is often associated with spicy foods.

Johannisberg Riesling – This grape is best in climates colder, and is known for its high resistance to frost. The production is generally low Riesling wine. Riesling is grown successfully in California, Washington, Germany and other parts of northern Europe in growth. Wines made from Riesling are universally rare, expensive and long term.

Muscat – Known as Moscatel Moscato in Spain and Italy, the Muscat grape is valued for its aroma and flavor of the values in bold. This type of grape grown massively in the south of France and its major crops to produce wines that are sweet and very floral.

Palomino – This grape is native to Spain, where sherry is used to produce thin. Palomino is also grown successfully in California, South Africa and Australia. In California, Palomino is often called as Golden Chasselas.

Sauvignon Blanc – obtained in the Graves district of Bordeaux and east of the Loire Valley This grape produces wines that are smoked in the earthy aroma. If grown in a cooler climate Sauvignon Blanc can produce an aftertaste of grass. This is a great harvest grapes and wines are usually inexpensive. This variety is produced in northern California, where it is called Fumé Blanc. Sauvignon Blanc is often associated with seafood

Scheurebe – This variety was developed in Germany and is a cross between Riesling and Sylvaner. The wines produced from grapes are Scheurebe aromatic and fruity. Often described as having idea "blackberry." This is a rare grape variety grown almost exclusively in Germany.

Semillon – This grape is used to produce table wine and often identified with the table wines produced in Sauternes from Bordeaux, France. It is a grape that ripens in spring season and is less likely to be damaged by frost or rain. Although successfully cultivated Semillon California and Washington, the area is very limited.

Sylvaner – This grape is grown mainly in Germany and northern Europe. It can also be found in the wine region of Alsace, France. The aroma and flavor of Sylvaner are similar (but not as powerful) for Riesling. It is a wine with acidity higher than is naturally sweet, and sometimes is done in a dessert wine.
