Grape Plant Help..?

i have a grape plant which i planted in august( or september, i cant remember) and for winter i covered it with straw (well, the stem) so that the snow wouldnt kill it. i have read that a grape plant needs to be pruned in the second winter, or something like that….

i dont really undrstand how to prune the plant(for example: where to prune it, in which month, etc…)

if anybody can explain it to me a little more, or if anybody knows a useful website,i would appreciated, it.

thanks ;)

Here are threee sites that have pretty much the same info
    http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/pdf/1428.pdf
    http://www.ehow.com/how_172725_prune-grape-vine.html

just remember the plants are quite young and you will have to trim what may seem like a lot this year. It is too young to produce grapes at this point.

I have grown grape plants for years. I have never pruned them. I still get too many grapes.

This is one of the most fun activities in gardening… You should act as if you are pruning your worst enemies plant… Train the whole plant like a T on a horizontal wire… Then keep 8 strong and short branches on each direction of the plant… they should be in an opposite direction… Cut off the downward branches as they tend to be weaker… Each one of these short branches must have at least 8 nodes… with doing this you can always have those quality grapes you’ve always dreamed of!… This pruning must be done before spring… Good luck…
