Has Any Got an Opinion on Digging Up and Replanting an Old Grapevine?
It is not atually a grapevine but a muscodine vine which is very similar (same vine appearance and root appearance). Here is Georgia, muscodines grow in the woods. I just spent a couple of hours digging up this vine in the woods and i replanted it. Unfortunately i broke a some of the roots, but I was able to keep most of it.. you guys think it would live? any suggestions. Should i water it a lot. It has some grapes/muscodines on it.
Since part of the roots were damaged it would be a good idea to cut part of it off so the the remaining roots don’t have as much foliage to support and it should do okay.
vines has a way of hanging on, ,put nice rich dirt, and keep it watered well for a week or two , so the roots has a chanch to restart, put some peat moss or muche around the outer side , like a ring, but stay away from the vine trunk by a couple of feet, it needs to breath,,
If you want it to live you should have waited till fall. cut it down to about 1-2 ft tall, then dig it up and replant it .keep it moist but not too wet for the remainder of the fall, mulch it well especially if the temps get to freezing. It should come out in the spring but may not produce the first year
I’d go ahead and cut the one you just planted because I doubt it will be able to support the whole vine since you cant get all the roots. Also it will need all its energy to get a root system established before next spring, not trying to feed the whole vine with half its root system.
