My House Has No Hallway and Bedrooms Are Located Off Living Room – Besides Strange-How Do You Decorate?

I didn’t choose the house, my husband did. The door to our child’s room is off the living room. Our bedroom is steps away and french doors were used instead of conventional ones. I’ve tried to hide the bedroom entrances with screen dividers but the LR dimensions does not make that an option. And I can see the kitchen from the LR too. Maybe I should just move but that is not realistic in the San Diego house market. It’s a small house – 1400 SF and half the house is our BR which was an add on. I;m worried as our child grows – no privacy for her as it is now but it will only get worse. I just don’t know how to decorate it on a dime budget. It was built in 1932 and was once a caretaker’s house for the grapes grown in this area. Even the 3rd BR is not a bedroom – just has a french door and no windows.

i was about to suggest the first answer. do you plan on having more children? the 3rd br would be great as a den or playroom. for your little girl to have more privacy, you may think about a playhouse bed, or princess bed. i was at the home depot paint center and Disney has a example of a princess bed, built into the wall, similar to the ones found in european homes. with curtains, she can have a small room just for a bed, and room to play. you can build storage around the bed. a cheaper version could be built with a bunk bed, with curtains around the bottom bunk and a play area on top.

French doors are easy to curtain for privacy. Just double the fabric and put a rod at the top and bottom of each door. The fabric should fit from rod to rod and with the fabric doubled it will look nice on both sides. You could even make the panels that face the LR one color and the panel that faces the room another fabric to coordinate with the bedroom. Put the curtains on the bedroom side of the doors for privacy.
Replacement doors are not too expensive for interior doors. They can be bought unfinished so you can match them to the rooms other trim and can be purchased with the jam attached so they are easier to install.

this is going to cost some money but its a WHOLE lot cheaper than a new house and it’s simple-make your own hallway hire a pro. to put up beams the whole lenght of the wall then put drywall over it but if you dont like that rearange your living room soyou have your longest couch’s back facing all the doors then a smaller couch or a chair etc. faceing your kitchen but i dont know how well that would work but it never hurts to try
