Vineyard Field Grafting to Rootstock

December 27th, 2011 1 comment

This video documents field grafting of scion material onto rootstock vines in a young vineyard. The grafters are using chip-bud grafting. The rootstocks were planted in the vineyard and allowed to grow for two years. The grafters come in during years 2 or 3 to graft scion wood onto the growing rootstock. Once the chip bud graft heals and the bud begins to grow, the rootsock portion of the vine is cut off above the new scion growth. This work is conducted by professional grafting crews with significant experience. They work more efficiently and have higher percentage of grafting success. This should not be trialed by amateurs or those with little experience in grafting as the success of graft take is reduced significantly. This video is for educational purposes only.
