Why Is Wine Such a Big Deal and Expensive?
Now I just want to make it clear that I’m not old enough to drink alcohol so I’ve never had wine. But whenever we’re at gatherings the people who can drink wine sometimes make a big deal out of it, and in movies and tv shows, wine is like the symbol of fanciness. I was under the impression that it’s basically fruit juice (normally grape/prune juice) with alcohol. What’s the big deal about it? Why would people pay thousands of dollars for a glass of prune juice?
I’m guessing when I get older I’ll find out, but I’m curious now.
I think it probably gained its status as something to be appreciated simply because it’s one of the oldest beverages in the world, and is hard to make.
Vintners have had many centuries to create grapes with specific flavour variations through selective breeding, and rich people have always needed something to spend their money on. They want to have the most refined taste, so wine gave them an opportunity to be snobby about something.
As for why it’s popular, it actually is pretty good in terms of alcoholic beverages. Much tastier than beer. And you really can taste the difference between two different wines without even knowing what you’re drinking. So even I, as a very new wine drinker, have a bit of fun comparing the taste of one wine to the taste of wines I’ve had previously. It’s also worth mentioning, since I’m quite sure this is part of why wine is popular, that wine also gets you drunk faster than other things. I’m not exactly sure how the chemistry of that works, but it does. Try it for yourself some day.
It’s not prune juice, it’s fermented grape juice. All alcohol comes from the fermentation of sugars in a sweet or starchy fruit, vegetable or grain. Beer is made from fermented grains. Vodka is often made from potatoes. Rum is made from sugar cane. Etc.
And wine doesn’t have to be a fancy thing at all. Go to any purveyor of alcohol, and you’ll see that the selection of expensive wines is quite limited compared to the selection of everyday wines priced between $10 and $30.
Because is hard to make
Basically, its quite expensive to harvest and produce, There are thousands of workers used to make wine and wine companies have to pay that but they’re kinda refreshing… sorta
sorry but some people even after they’re older still dont appreciate it but wine to me is like art and not just any art but a masterpeice in. And because of how it is made and waiting for you to open it and drink it. It’s hard not to appreciate good wine
Prune juice comes from plums not grapes.
Some wineries have been around for many years, won awards, grown prize winning grapes and developed excellent wines with skilled wine making knowledge.
Not all wines are super expensive. There are very good wines for less than $10 a bottle.
I love wine, won’t pay a ton of money for a bottle. The box-o-wine is fine with me.
Its a social status thing. To be honest winemaking is an artform. It takes skill, knowledge, patience, and time to make a really great wine, a wine that tastes beautiful. If you drink it often enough you do actually taste all the things you read on the label that says you can taste… pineapple, guava, etc. This is why it is expensive.
Honestly though I think its just this hoity social status thing to drink very old, expensive wine. I assure you that many people just look at the price and think expensive = good.
Nonsense! You can get great wine for fairly cheap.
